A score of 6.5 can be frustrating because the writing may already seem “good.” You can answer the question, organize paragraphs, and use varied vocabulary—yet the score does not move. Improvement usually comes not from adding more impressive words but from identifying which scoring criterion is inconsistent.
Understand what the score represents
IELTS Writing is evaluated across four broad areas: task response or task achievement, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. A polished introduction cannot compensate fully for ideas that are insufficiently developed. Similarly, strong vocabulary cannot overcome frequent grammatical errors that interrupt meaning.
Review feedback by criterion. “Improve your writing” is too vague to guide practice; “develop each main idea with a specific explanation and relevant example” gives you a measurable task.
Develop ideas beyond the first explanation
Many Band 6.5 essays present relevant main ideas but stop developing them too soon. A body paragraph may state a reason and give a general example without explaining the mechanism or consequence.
Use this sequence when planning: claim, explanation, specific example, and connection to the question. Not every paragraph must follow a mechanical formula, but each central idea should be developed enough for the reader to understand why it supports your position.
Public transport reduces pollution because fewer people use cars.
BETTER DEVELOPEDReliable public transport can reduce pollution by allowing large numbers of commuters to replace individual car journeys. When services are frequent and affordable, households may also delay purchasing additional vehicles, producing a longer-term reduction in urban emissions.
Create progression, not just paragraphing
An essay can have four visible paragraphs and still lack coherence. Each paragraph needs a distinct purpose, and its relationship to the thesis must be clear. Before writing, summarize each body paragraph in one sentence. If the sentences repeat one another, your plan needs sharper distinctions.
Use linking words selectively. Repeating “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and “On the other hand” does not create logic by itself. The ideas must genuinely add, contrast, qualify, or result from one another.
Choose precise vocabulary over unusual vocabulary
Students sometimes try to reach Band 7 by replacing simple words with rare synonyms. This often creates unnatural collocations or changes the intended meaning. Precision and control matter more than decoration.
- Learn words in phrases, not as isolated synonyms.
- Notice which nouns commonly follow a verb or adjective.
- Avoid memorized expressions that do not fit the exact question.
- Use subject-specific vocabulary only when you can control it accurately.
Balance grammatical range with accuracy
Band improvement requires both varied structures and reliable control. If every sentence is short and simple, range is limited. If every sentence is long and heavily subordinated, errors multiply and meaning becomes unclear.
Practice a manageable range: clear simple sentences for emphasis, compound sentences for related points, and complex sentences for cause, contrast, condition, and qualification. During revision, check subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals, punctuation, and sentence boundaries.
Use focused practice
Writing complete timed essays every day can reinforce the same mistakes. Alternate full practice with targeted exercises: spend one session developing body-paragraph examples, another revising unclear topic sentences, and another correcting recurring grammar patterns from your previous work.
After every essay, keep an error log with three columns: the original sentence, the corrected version, and the rule or lesson. Review the log before writing again. Improvement becomes faster when each new essay responds to evidence from the last one.
A practical Band 7 checklist
Before finishing, ask whether you answered every part of the task, maintained a clear position, fully developed each main idea, created logical progression, used vocabulary precisely, varied sentence structures, and left time to correct frequent errors. Band 7 is not perfect writing. It is clear, developed, and consistently controlled writing.
